About The Artist

Baltimore native, Felton L. Barner, Jr., currently resides in Columbia, MD with his wife and nearby family. A father of three and grandfather of two, he recently retired after 30 years as an IT professional. Since retiring in 2007, Felton has been able to re-engage his long time love of photography.

Felton began shooting in the mid-70s and recalls the fun and excitement of photographing images of all sorts.

Felton's first camera was a Fujica ST801 35mm film SLR; his development method: trays of sloshing chemicals in a darkened room. His printing method: a metal monster of an enlarger projecting negative images onto a blank piece of paper, again, in a darkened room. All the while anticipating what the printed image will look like after calculating color compensations and exposure times (this is called guessing!). Turn on the enlarger, listen for the ding of the timer and voila! Whew!

Today, Felton uses a computerized automated digital camera. His development method: a computer. His printing method: a. . . printer! All done in a well-lit room. Though the ways have changed, the joy and gratification of going from viewfinder to final print remain.

No longer restricted to a mostly manual process, Felton utilizes modern image-producing tools to uncover and discover alternate "looks" of an image that vary from the real image we are accustomed to seeing. By adjusting the visual elements of an image or re-imaging, he is able to explore new combinations of shape, texture, lighting and color beyond that of the real image.

Having first exhibited at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in 1978, Felton most recently displayed his works at the International Center for Artistic Development, Inc in March 2009.
